2010 Favia The Lincoln, Grenache, Amador
In the spirit of experimentation and the recent firing up of old gold mines in Amador, we bestowed the moniker "The Lincoln" to the newest addition to the Favia line-up. Owned by renowned California politician and philanthropist Leland Stanford, the Lincoln is an erstwhile gold mine that took its time before revealing its own treasure. Contrarily, we willingly share our newest Favia darling with open arms: our 100% Grenache - with its old roots in the southern Rhône and its newfound feet in the quartz and gold-ribboned soils of Amador.
The Lincoln Grenache revealed itself to us over time. In 2009, we made two open-top barrel fermenters of whole-cluster Grenache. This bold wine ultimately became a fitting component in our 2009 Rompecabezas. During the 2010 harvest, we got a little braver and made a separate fermentation in stainless steel with 20% whole cluster. Throughout the fermentation, bright fruit characters of fresh strawberries filled the cellar. We aged the wine in one-third new French oak and two-thirds neutral oak. To our delight, the result is a ruby-hued silken textured wine, replete with sweet tannins and notes of raspberries, Chelan cherries, English toffee and wildflowers.
